Abstract
Thrombosis of the superior mesenteric vein(SMV) was first recognized as a clinical entity by Warren and Eberhard in 1935. The incidence has been estimated between 15% and 55% of all mesenteric vascular occlusion. Initially reported mortality
rates have ranged between 60% and 70% but in subsequent publication, these rates have been reported at 20%. Mortality without surgical treatment has been estimated close to 100%, yet, recent publications have been reported therapeutic successes with simple anticoagulation. We recently experienced a case of the superior mesenteric venous thrombosis associated peritonitis, successfully treated with anticoagulation therapy. Thus, we report this case with a brief review of the literatures.
